If you’re thinking about direct cremation in Sale or the Trafford area, you’ve probably noticed how many providers offer one.
National companies advertise on television and online, and local funeral directors like us offer them too.
More choice is a good thing, but it can make it hard to know what you’re getting for your money.
Here’s a straightforward guide to what a direct cremation is.
It helps you decide if it suits you and lists essential questions before choosing who looks after your loved one.
What is a direct cremation?
A direct cremation is an unattended cremation. There’s no funeral service or ceremony at the crematorium, and family and friends don’t attend the cremation itself.
For some families, that’s exactly right. You may want to keep things simple, hold a private gathering at home, or arrange a memorial later when everyone can be there. Others simply feel a traditional funeral isn’t what their loved one would have wanted. There’s no single right way to say goodbye.
Is direct cremation right for you?
Direct cremation isn’t the right choice for everyone. If you’d like family and friends to be at the crematorium, a simple funeral or a more traditional service may suit you better. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to talk the options through with you, without any pressure to decide.
Don’t just compare the headline price
It’s tempting to choose based on the advertised price alone. But the cheapest headline figure isn’t always a like-for-like comparison. Before choosing any direct cremation provider, it’s worth asking:
- Is bringing your loved one into care included, at any time of day or night?
- Where will they be cared for before the cremation – and how far away is that?
- Which crematorium will be used?
- Are the coffin, transport, legal paperwork and crematorium fees all included?
- Are there any circumstances where extra charges could apply?
- How, and when, will the ashes be returned?
- Who will you speak to if you have a question?
Every funeral director must publish a Standardised Price List, set by the Competition and Markets Authority, so families can compare prices fairly. It’s always worth asking to see it.
Why choose a local funeral director for a direct cremation?
We don’t believe one type of provider is right for every family. But choosing a local, independent funeral director does bring some real benefits.
Your loved one is cared for locally. With us, they’re brought into our care and rest at our funeral home on Green Lane, Ashton upon Mersey, in the community, close to home. For many families, knowing exactly where their loved one is matters a great deal.
You can speak to the people looking after them. A bereavement is an unfamiliar and difficult time. Being able to call, or pop in and speak to Steph and our team, can make everything easier to understand.
Local knowledge. We know the local crematoria, registrars and hospital bereavement teams across Trafford and south Manchester, and we’ll guide you through each step.
Direct cremation doesn’t mean less care
The word “direct” describes the type of cremation. It does not mean your loved one receives less care. We look after them from the moment they come into our care until the cremation, provide a simple, dignified coffin, complete all the paperwork and arrange the cremation at a local crematorium. The only difference is that there is no attended service.
